Assigning Axon Devices to Police Officers
When an officer in the field records a critical event on a camera that is associated with another officer, searching for the video of the event in Evidence.com becomes more difficult. Time wasted at the station means time wasted in investigating critical incidents, and delayed sharing of information with the public.
The old system of assigning cameras was both time-consuming and error-prone. A mobile application was built that could leverage the NFC chips in Axon devices to quickly and accurately assign cameras to police officers.
TASER 7 would be the first TASER weapon to be supported in the app, and along with it, many other accessory devices would need to be supported, such as batteries and cartridges. My team was tasked with building a way to assign multiple devices to a single officer.

Old Bulk Assignment (Evidence.com)
Problems
There is no way for users to assign multiple devices to a single officer
The manual bulk assignment process is tedious and prone to errors
Users
SERGEANT
In charge of 30 patrol officers (aka section or unit)
Assigns devices to officers in their section
Gives daily briefings to sections at the beginning of a shift: BOLO alerts (be on the lookout), any community events needing extra patrol, etc.
ARMORER
In charge of mid-size agency's (600 sworn officers) firearms and CEWs
Places orders for CEWs, cartridges, and batteries based on the agency's needs
Operates the training facility at the agency where any extra CEWs and equipment are kept
Runs firmware updates once per quarter
Project Priorities
Support assignment of multiple devices to a single officer
Add support for the TASER 7 CEW, the TASER 7 Battery, and TASER 7 Cartridges
Add support for different methods of scanning a device, since not all Axon devices have NFC chips
Process
Sketches
Whiteboards
Users need to be able to hand off multiple devices at once to a single officer to speed up the process of assignment. They might be assigning the officer's camera, CEW, and cartridges all at once. Or they might be handing out a brand new shipment of cartridges, up to 4 cartridges per officer. Entering serial numbers one at a time would be (is) a nightmare.

Key Decisions
Large switch at bottom of screen will force divergence on scan method, not device type
A shopping cart model is familiar - don't reinvent the wheel
Keep the language in the UI understandable, but don't sacrifice accuracy
Ex. datamatrix vs. 2D code vs. barcode
